Of monsters and myths
Both monsters and miraculous births were frequently represented in the museum. They mostly appeared as human or human-like beings with physical deformations or peculiarities. The variety of these bodies – and their interpretations – was great; it ranged from compositions featuring two bodies to imaginative arrangements of numerous and differently shaped limbs. The decisive factor for the monsters' otherness was the criteria of wonder. In addition to physical features, they could also be distinguished by a specific character trait and were generally mythical figures.
