curiositas 5.0

About

Curiositas 5.0 exploits digital technologies to tell the story of the Museum Faesch. This cabinet of curiosities, founded in the 17th century, no longer exists today. The majority of its objects, however, have been preserved in the collection of three Basel GLAM-institutions: Historisches Museum, Kunstmuseum, and University Library.
Curiositas 5.0 does not aim to reconstruct this cabinet of curiosities but presents the collection as a site of manifold encounters. Here, actors, practices, discourses, and objects met in the light of their local relationships and trans-local entanglements. Different approaches provide an understanding of such a collection as a historical arena of knowledge and a site for digital amazement.
Digital curation and storytelling present stories from the Museum Faesch and shed light to its transformations from the 17th to the 19th century. By doing so, it becomes obvious how a regional approach to a increasingly global material culture changed. Past(s) and tradition(s) play just as much a role as expectations and visions for the future.
At the same time, the project reflects on the significance of the internet and digital technologies for cultural heritage. After Web 2.0, Economy 3.0, and Industry 4.0, a plea is made for Culture 5.0 - hence curiositas 5.0.
In this vision, the digital domain becomes a site of amazement and a form of representation for historical as well as contemporary actors: objects as social history, material culture as symptomatic, and an element of social life, whose availability in the internet represents less a reflection than a comprehensive transformation.
The project complies with international standards within data science and digital technologies (FAIR, CARE, LOUD) and implements solutions as strictly open and reusable.
