On the use of History
Things stand in time. They age, their material tires, they break down and decay. When a thing loses its usefulness, it is usually thrown away, but sometimes a new use is found for it. In collections, things also have the benefit of telling stories: of their origin, of previous owners or of the time of their creation. Some things were also created to commemorate past events or historical persons. Collectors have used such reified history in various ways for self-representation and self-legitimation. Various facets of this use of history can be shown in a gold bowl with ancient coins from the Faesch Museum and its relationship to other objects.
